FAQ

  • What does Take Off do?

Take Off is a small Scottish charity that helps young people experience the thrill of flying. We believe that stepping inside an aircraft and taking control is an experience that very few people ever get to have. Our aim is to remove financial and social barriers so that every young person, regardless of background, has the chance to take to the skies.

  • Who can apply for a flying experience?

Our programmes are open to young people aged 13 - 17 who attend school. We welcome applications from anyone who has an interest in flight but might not otherwise have the opportunity to experience it.

  • How much does it cost to take part?

Thanks to our supporters and funders, participants do not pay for their flying experience. Each flight is fully funded through donations and grants.

  • Where do the flights take place?

Flights usually take place at Perth Airport in central Scotland, home to one of the country’s leading flight training centres. We occasionally use other regional airfields depending on weather and availability.

  • How do you choose who takes part?

We work with local schools and youth organisations to identify suitable candidates. Young people are invited to take part in short, friendly activities that let them show their interest and enthusiasm. Our focus is always on potential, not prior experience.

  • Is Take Off a registered charity?

Yes. Take Off is a registered Scottish charity (SC043716). We are fully volunteer-run and rely on grants, sponsorship and community fundraising to continue our work.

  • Can I donate or sponsor a young person’s flight?

Absolutely. Donations of any size directly support our flying experiences and educational sessions. You can also sponsor a full flight in your own name or in memory of someone special. Visit our Donations page for details.

  • Can schools or youth groups get involved?

Yes. We work closely with secondary schools, particularly S2 and S3 year groups, to offer talks, workshops and flying opportunities. If you’re a teacher or youth worker, please get in touch to discuss partnership options.

  • What do participants gain from the experience?

For many, this is their first time in a small aircraft. An unforgettable, confidence-building moment. They learn about teamwork, decision-making and self-belief while seeing that a world once out of reach is open to them.

  • How can I volunteer or get involved?

We welcome volunteers with or without aviation experience. Opportunities include mentoring, event support, fundraising and outreach. Contact us to learn more.

  • Why focus on aviation experiences?

Flying is one of the most inspiring experiences a person can have, yet it remains out of reach for most. We want to change that. By taking away financial, geographical and social barriers, Take Off gives young people the chance to look down on the world from above and realise that new horizons are possible.

  • What difference does one flight really make?

A single flight can change everything. For many of our participants, it’s the first time they’ve been in a light aircraft, and the experience stays with them for life. It builds confidence, curiosity, and a sense of possibility. Every flight shows a young person that their future can be bigger than they imagined.
